Terms of Service
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Welcome to asterisk. These terms govern your use of the app. By creating an account or using asterisk, you agree to them. We've kept them short and readable — if anything's unclear, email us at hello@asterisk.app.
1. The service
asterisk revision is a study toolkit. It helps you log past papers, build flashcards, track revision time, organise topics, and see analytics on your progress. It's a tool to help you study — not a guarantee of any result.
2. Your account
You can use asterisk revision without an account (as a guest), or create an account to save your data to the cloud. If you create an account:
- You must be 13 or over. Between 13 and 17 you can create an account yourself; nothing asks a parent or guardian to confirm it. You can buy a subscription yourself, or send them a link so they pay — see section 5.
- You agree to give accurate information — at least a name and an email address you can receive mail at.
- You're responsible for keeping your password secure.
- You're responsible for all activity under your account.
- One account per person. Don't share login details.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use asterisk revision for any illegal purpose.
- Attempt to access, modify, or disrupt data that isn't yours.
- Scrape, crawl, or reverse-engineer the app.
- Use the AI features to generate harmful, abusive, or misleading content.
- Upload material you don't have the right to upload — see section 11.
- Resell or sublicense access to the app without our permission.
- Use asterisk to harass, bully or endanger anybody, including yourself.
Violations may result in account suspension or termination. We'll give you notice where possible, except in cases of serious abuse.
4. Paid plans
Every figure below is generated from the same configuration the checkout charges from, so a price here cannot drift from a price you would actually pay.
4.1 What the plans cost
| Plan | Monthly | Pass to results day | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| free | £0 | £0 | £0 |
| pro | £7.99 | £49 | £59 |
| max | £14.99 | £99 | £119 |
A pass to results day is one payment and lasts until the next 31 August after the day you buy it; it never renews. The yearly plan is offered to university students. We sometimes test a price, so you may be shown a different price for a plan or pass than someone else is; the price shown at checkout is the one you pay.
Prices include any VAT that applies. The exact amount is worked out at checkout from your billing country. If VAT changes, the price you see at checkout changes with it.
4.2 Renewal
A subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period — every month for a monthly plan, every year for a yearly one — at the price above, until you cancel. We email you three days before a renewal, and three days before a free trial ends if you are on one.
4.3 Cancelling
You can cancel at any time from the Account page. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it doesn't refund the period you're in, and you keep the paid features until that period ends.
If you've entered your exam dates, we offer to end a monthly subscription automatically a week after your last exam. The option is off unless you tick it, so a plan renews normally after exams. If you tick it, that's a cancellation date set in advance, not a separate contract, and you can change or remove it at any time.
4.4 Your 14 days to change your mind
A plan or pass starts as soon as you pay. Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 you have 14 days to change your mind: ask for a refund within 14 days of paying, a renewal's payment included, and we refund the full amount. The plan or pass ends at once and your account goes back to what it had before you paid: Free, for most accounts.
4.5 Refunds
After those 14 days we don't refund a period already started; cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep the plan to the end of the period you paid for. We will refund in full where we charged you after you cancelled, where the service was unavailable for a substantial part of a billing period, or where a payment was taken without the account holder's authorisation. A refund in full ends the plan or pass it paid for. Ask by email and we'll answer within five working days.
4.6 One-off passes and add-ons
Some things are bought once rather than subscribed to — a pass that runs to a fixed date, or a pack of AI messages. These don't renew. A pass ends on its stated date whether or not you used it; a pack of messages doesn't expire. Neither is refundable once used, subject to 4.4.
4.7 Changing prices
We may change prices. An existing subscription keeps its price until the next renewal, and we email you at least 30 days before a renewal at a new price. You can cancel before it takes effect.
4.8 Failed payments
If a payment fails, your card issuer is retried over about two weeks and you keep your paid features during that time. If it never succeeds the subscription ends and the account returns to Free — nothing is deleted. Data above the Free limits is hidden, and comes back if you subscribe again.
5. If you are under 18
If you're between 13 and 17:
- you can create an account and use asterisk yourself; nothing asks a parent or guardian to confirm it (section 2);
- you can buy a plan or a pass yourself, with your own card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, the same way an adult does, and you agree to these terms when you pay;
- or you can send a parent or guardian a link instead. They enter their own email address, tick a box confirming they agree to these terms and are paying for your account, and pay. They become our customer for that subscription, they can cancel it at any time, and receipts and renewal notices go to them. We record their email address, the date, the version of these terms and the IP address the agreement came from, as our record that consent was given.
If you're under 13 you may not create an account. We'll close any account we find that belongs to someone under 13.
6. AI features and accuracy
asterisk revision includes AI-powered features: an assistant, flashcard generation, and practice test generation. These features use a model to generate content based on your input.
- AI content may be wrong. Flashcards, answers, and summaries can contain errors. Always verify against your exam specification, textbooks, and teacher guidance.
- Don't rely solely on AI. Use it as a study aid, not a source of truth. Cross-check everything.
- You own what you create. AI-generated content that you save to your study data is yours.
There's a monthly allowance of AI messages on each plan. We'll tell you what's left, and we won't charge you for messages you didn't ask for.
7. Safety
If a message you send to the AI suggests you may be at risk of harm, asterisk answers with helpline details instead of an ordinary reply, and records that it happened so a person can look. It records that a message was flagged, where, and what kind — never the message itself. Anything you publish to the Library is checked the same way before other students can see it. Your own notes, cards, tasks and imports are not checked.
This isn't a crisis service and it isn't monitored around the clock. If you're in immediate danger, call 999.
8. No guarantee of results
asterisk revision is a study aid. It does not guarantee any exam grade, qualification, or outcome. Your results depend on your own effort, the accuracy of the data you enter, and factors outside our control. We make no promises about the effectiveness of the app for any particular student or subject.
9. Your data
You own your study data. We process it on your behalf to provide the service. You can export your data from Settings at any time, and you can delete your account and all associated data from the Account page. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
10. What you upload, and what we may do with it
You keep ownership of everything you create in asterisk — notes, flashcards, questions, boards, uploaded files. We claim no ownership over it.
To run the service we need permission to store it, back it up and show it back to you. So you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy and display your content for the purpose of providing asterisk to you, and for no other purpose. It ends when you delete the content or your account.
If you choose to publish something to the Library, you additionally allow other students to read it and to keep a copy in their own account, and you allow us to show it, index it and moderate it. You can withdraw a publication; copies other students already took stay with them.
11. Copyright, and past papers
Exam papers and mark schemes are the copyright of the exam boards. Most boards' licences forbid reproducing them on third-party websites.
- Don't upload material you don't have the right to upload.
- Don't publish exam-board wording to the Library.
- asterisk stores facts about papers — board, subject, session, marks per question, your own answers and marks — and links to the board's own PDF. It is not a paper library.
Notice and takedown. If you own copyright in something on asterisk and believe it's here without permission, email us with a description of the work, where it appears, and a statement that you're the owner or authorised to act for them. We aim to remove or disable access within five working days while we look, and we'll tell whoever uploaded it. Repeated infringement will end an account.
12. Intellectual property
asterisk — its code, design, branding and content, excluding your study data — is ours and protected by intellectual property law. You may not copy, modify, distribute or create derivative works from it without written permission.
13. Termination
You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. Deleting it cancels any subscription; we don't refund the period you're in.
We can suspend or end an account that breaks these terms, or if we discontinue the service — in which case we'll give reasonable notice, a chance to export, and refund any unused part of a period paid for in advance.
14. Disclaimer of warranties
asterisk is provided “as is” and “as available.” We don't warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that the AI features will produce accurate results.
Nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — including that a digital service must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.
15. Limitation of liability
We don't exclude or limit liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't lawfully be limited.
Subject to that, and to the maximum extent the law allows:
- we're not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive loss, or for lost grades, opportunities or study time;
- our total liability for any claim connected with the service is limited to the greater of (a) what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, and (b) £100.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do we update the “Last updated” date and the terms version below. If a change materially affects what you agreed to — price, renewal, cancellation, or what we do with your data — we'll tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, and you can cancel before then.
17. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of England and Wales, unless you're a consumer with mandatory rights to a different jurisdiction.
