Accessibility Statement
Last updated: 21 October 2026
asterisk revision is built for students, and that means it has to work for everyone. We're committed to making the app accessible to users with disabilities, and we follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as our target. This statement explains what we support, what we're working on, and how to tell us if something's wrong.
What the app supports
asterisk revision includes the following accessibility features, available in Settings:
- Reduced motion — disables animations and transitions for users sensitive to motion. The app respects the browser-level
prefers-reduced-motionsetting automatically. - High contrast — raises contrast and saturation across the page with a filter. It does not yet bring the faint text below up to AA.
- Keyboard navigation — the command palette (⌘K / Ctrl+K) lets you search and navigate without a mouse. Interactive elements are keyboard-focusable.
- Semantic HTML — pages use proper landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), headings are structured, and forms have associated labels.
- ARIA labels — icon-only buttons have descriptive
aria-labelattributes for screen readers. - Colour contrast — body text, headings and controls meet WCAG AA contrast in both light and dark themes, with the exceptions listed under Known limitations.
- Voice answers — in flashcard review, “Say your answer” takes a spoken answer where the browser supports speech recognition.
How to enable these features
Open the app, go to Settings (from the Account page), and adjust the Accessibility section. Your preferences are saved automatically.
Known limitations
We're aware of the following limitations and are working to fix them:
- Faint text — one text colour, used for dates, counts, the second word of the asterisk wordmark and the links at the foot of these pages, is 2.24:1 against the page, below AA’s 4.5:1.
- Error text under some fields is 3.6:1 against the panel in light mode, below AA’s 4.5:1.
- Text size — the setting in Settings does not change the size of text yet. Your browser’s zoom does.
- Touch — on some screens a row’s actions (pin, delete and others) appear only when a pointer hovers over it, so on a phone they are reached by opening the item.
- Dialogs and drawers — in some of them keyboard focus can move to the page behind, and some drawers do not close with Escape.
- Drag-and-drop interactions (the Organiser kanban board, flashcard reordering) are primarily mouse-based. Keyboard alternatives exist but aren't fully polished.
- Past papers open on the exam board's own site, usually as PDFs. How they read with a screen reader depends on the board's file; you can download them and use your preferred reader.
- Mobile gestures — some mobile interactions rely on touch gestures that may be difficult for users with motor impairments.
If you encounter a barrier not listed here, please tell us so we can prioritise it.
Browser compatibility
asterisk revision works best in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Some features (like spoken answers in flashcard review) depend on browser support and may not be available in all browsers.
Reporting accessibility issues
We want to know if something's broken. If you find an accessibility barrier in asterisk, email us at hello@asterisk.app with:
- The page or feature where you encountered the issue
- What you expected to happen vs. what actually happened
- Your browser and device (if relevant)
We'll investigate and, where possible, fix it in the next release.
Changes to this statement
We'll update this statement as we improve accessibility or add new features. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
