The safe rule

Grade boundaries move from year to year. A mark that was a 7 one summer can be a 6 the next. A mock is not sat in any series, so there is no one set of boundaries that is its own.

The safe rule takes the board’s most recent summer series, up to three of them, and leaves out 2020 to 2022, when grades were set differently. For each grade it uses the highest boundary of those series. So a grade from the safe rule would have been enough in every one of them.

A course with no summer series uses its main series instead. Where the boards’ totals differ between series, each boundary is compared as a share of its total.
